Mg Mgb And Mgb V8 Information

Produced by British Leyland the MGAs replacement the MGB became the number one selling sports car with an extremely sleek design.

Rapid sales saw the MGB initially a soft top released as GT and GT V8 versions. The 1800cc 4 cylinder engine was quick for its day capable of reaching 060mph in eleven seconds and producing just under 100hp. Due to advances in production such as the monocoque chassis MGB was able to produce a lighter model compared to the rivals of the day such as the Triumphs. Coupled with the advances in performance was the progress in the MGB safety features including the first crumple zones.

The MGB GT was a hard top version released in 1965. Although the rear of the car was limited due to the use of a small bench instead of full seats the hard top was said to have better handling and higher top speed due to a more rigid chassis and better aerodynamics. Being one of the first ever hatchbacks the MGB GT was popular due to its versatile nature. The rear space offered a large flat luggage area due to the folding rear seats creating a more practical solution for a lot of drivers.

The MGB GT V8 was introduced in 1973 powered by the Rover V8 thus the MGB GT V8 was a much powerful variation and was capable of very respectable performance figures. Top speed of 125 mph and going 060mph around the 8 second mark.

During the successful MGB production there was the release of the mk2 and mk3 MGB. These new variations saw slight tweaks to the original MGB model mainly small changes to the exterior such as the grille bumper and windscreen wipers. A more notable introduction was that of the MGBs sister the MG MGB. The MGB was powered by a 2.9L 6 cylinder engine capable of reaching close to 120mph and output just under 150hp which made it a much powerful alternative to the popular MGB. Slight changes were made to the exterior of the MGB most noted was the larger wheels and power bulge on the bonnet.

The once very popular sports car ceased production in 1980 due to slowing sale figures.

What was your earliest memory of auto racing? I remember watching a weekly TV show called “Jalopy Races From Hollywood”. This was my earliest memory of having interest in following the sport of auto racing.

One of my most favorite memories when growing up in the 50′s and 60′s was being able to hear the auto racing action stock cars and open cockpit midget at Freeport Speedway in Freeport New York from two 2 towns away. They ran races during the summer on Tuesday night Friday night and Saturday night. Going to the races as a spectator was also a rush for me.

I loved everything about it the smell of racing fuel burning rubber sawdust and hot dogs from the food concessions. During the late 50′s and early 60′s the racing drew large crowds of spectators. I can see in my minds eye to this day all the activity the vendors selling race collectibles the sound and smell of the concession stands pop corn hot dogs and the like. I can still hear the beer vendor as his went up and down the stands yelling out the familiar phrase of “Get Ya Cold Beer Here” Of course I was too young to become one of his customers. Other vendors sold copies of Speedway News programs hot dogs replica racing flags and many more items.

Some of the great racers that ran a Freeport Stadium are Les Ley Jim Lacy One of my favorites Bruno Brackey aka the Flying Mailman due to his day job George and Ed Brunnhoelzl George Brunnhoelzl Jr. George Jr. built the famed Brunnhoelzl jack used by many NASCAR Winston Cup teams today. Axel Anderson Richie Evans Jerry Cook Charlie Jarzombek Gary Winters Fred Harbach George Wagner Bill Spade Tom Baldwin Red Raynor Reinhardt and many more.

Freeport Stadium had gone through a series of different promoters over the years. This list included the names Kedenburg Larry Mendelsohn Duke Donaldson and Don Campi. Duke Donaldson was well know as the voice of Freeport Speedway. As the track announcer Donaldson for many years opened a race event with announcing “Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to Freeport Stadium the oldest continuouslyrun racetrack in the United States” and thanking everyone for visiting “Freeport Speedway in tropical Freeport.” His style did much to create a feeling of great action and professionalism for any given race event.

The second half of the 60′s began a decline in the popularity of stock car racing in Freeport. There were still many promotions being done but paid attendance declined.

Racing at Freeport took a final curtain in 1983 after 50 years of continuous operation.

The Land Rover Discovery has been available in Australia since the early nineties and has proven a popular choice judging by their numbers on Australian roads. Since its introduction the Land Rover Discovery mostly retained its original stylin until of course the recently released 2005 model.

If you are looking for a four wheel drive with a pedigree name then the Discovery with its Land Rover badge certainly fits the bill. On the highway the Land Rover Discovery offers a smooth ride but don’t expect sporty acceleration. Even the V8 petrol engine is fairly unremarkable in its acceleration thanks to the enormous weight of the vehicle. For this reason the turbo diesel is generally a much better bet because it offers similar performance but will cost you a lot less in fuel than the thirsty V8 petrol engine.

Inside the cabin some will find the feel a little disappointing especially taller drivers. Some of the controls are in hard to reach places and the height of the seat base means that some taller drivers may find it a little awkward and uncomfortable with their heads almost touching the roof.

Another problem that seems to afflict the Land Rover Discovery is that of reliability. The turbo diesel for example has somewhat of a reputation for snapping timing belts and cracking crankshafts. Turbochargers and starter engines have also provided problems for some Discovery owners. Other mechanical problems have included electrical faults and all manner of gearbox problems.

The recent volatile fuel prices and the falling value of homes have impacted both RV owners and the RV Industry. In the past several months many major RV manufacturers have shut their doors permanently.

Quite a few people who recently bought new RVs at the highest monthly payments that they could qualify for are now regretting their decision to get the RV of their dreams. In other words they over bought their RV and they are now paying the price for it.

Is this all doom and gloom for RVers and potential RVers? The answer is a resounding NO! If you were ever thinking about buying an RV or upgrading to a different class of RV now is the time to do it.

Because this is where the basic concept of Supply and Demand also known as price and demand you learned in your Economics class in high school kicks in. To put it in RV terms when the economy is bad the demand for RVs goes down.

With less demand the RV dealers are going to do everything they can to get rid of those new RVs in other words they will accept less money for them. The volatile fuel prices and questionable economy have also caused panic amongst some current RV owners. These owners have hastily made the decision to sell their RVs because they believe that they will no longer be able to afford to use them.

This has created a buyers market for RVs right now. Whether you are planning to buy a new or used RV you will be able to get a lot more for your money. Of course you are going to have to still negotiate the best price you can for what you want but now more than ever you are in the drivers seat during these negotiations. Depending on what type of RV you are going to buy the money you save on the purchase price could pay for your fuel and other travel expenses for quite awhile.

In some cases you may have to finance your RV purchase. When financing remember the finance company will give you a loan for as much as you want based on your credit. But just because they are going to give you that much credit does not mean that you have to use that much credit. You might believe you can afford the monthly payments. But you need to ask yourself if you can comfortably afford the monthly RV Loan payments and still have money left over to pay for the other costs of owning an RV such as fuel maintenance storage and of course camping. In other words dont overbuy.

Now lets address the concerns of the cost of going camping in your new RV. The biggest cost depending on the type of RV you have will be fuel. This would be a major concern if you are planning a 3500mile crosscountry trip. Now even for the most avid RVer is not the time to spend all of your money seeing the whole US unless you have deep pockets.

Getting away from it all and camping does not require traveling 100s or 1000s of miles. Look around within a 50 60 or 70mile radius of where you live and you will be surprised at all of the places there are to camp. Remember the whole point of RVing and camping is to relax and enjoy your surroundings. I guarantee you there is no mileage limit on relaxation. Whether you are 25 miles from home or 2500 miles from home you can and should relax: after all that is what the RVing Lifestyle is all about.

Our family has been RVing for over 35 years and we have been all over the US and Canada and have enjoyed every minute of it. Have we changed our RVing habits as a result of the economic crunch? YES we are not planning to travel 1000s of miles right now. Have we given up RVing? NO we just go camping closer to home visiting destinations we have not been to before. This change in our habits has not diminished our zeal for; or enjoyment of RVing.

You wont regret your decision to buy an RV. Just plan ahead and dont put a financial strain on yourself as this will diminish your enjoyment.
